Rich Laughlin Ensemble

The primary impetus behind the Ensemble was the creation of a forum to further compositional growth. An additional motivation was the chance through careful instrumentation and choice of players to develop a personal writing technique which mirrored the “faces” of the participants-much as Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Gil Evans demonstrated in their endeavors. This journey began 2006, That first year culminated in a tour through the Czech Republic with a DVD recorded live at the Jazz Bridge Festival in Prague. Featured soloist was jazz trumpet icon Dusko Goykovich. Soon after it became evident that there were other avenues to explore as the Ensemble tracked a steady metamorphosis from” small big band” to” large combo”in terms of musical mobility. The search continued as the focus on new timbres spawned greater risks in instrumentation prodding the need for players well heeled in both jazz and modern classical environs.
